Viali di Circonvallazione

The Viali di Circonvallazione are a series of 6-lane boulevards surrounding north part of the historic centre of Florence.

History

The boulevards follows the outline of the ancient walls of Florence, that were demolished since 1865 according to the Giuseppe Poggi's project to make Florence, then the capital of Italy, a modern and big city like the others European capitals.

The big boulevards were inspired by the similar parisian boulevard.

In the draw near the doors of the city were created big square and palaces site of the new bourgeois of the capital.

Today

Today the viali di Circonvallazione are the main arterial street of Florence for the traffic from west to east.
